Chapter Seven

Raphael

I don’t know how long I’ve been out. It could be mere seconds, but it could also be hours. When you’re in this much pain, time is a relative concept. It passes in wavelengths that determine how much longer you need to endure this, up until the moment when you decide to let go, that it’s not worth it. But I haven’t gotten to that point yet.

I blink heavily, and every blink feels like another punch right to my face. Every part of my body hurts. It screams in agony. This must be what it feels like to be dying. A long process, and you are painfully aware of each passing second, just waiting because there is nothing else you can do.

I try to lift my head off the ground. I manage only a little, drool and blood mixed stretch from the pool I was lying in all the way to the corner of my mouth. I have no strength, and I slump down back into that same wetness. I think I hear footsteps somewhere in the distance. Through the haze of bloodied eyes, I recognize the room. I’m still in the same place where I was brought by those two thugs. They must have left me for dead here.

Shame washes over me. I couldn’t handle two vampires. In my defense, they caught me off guard the first time, but the second time, I had my chance. I had it and I wasted it. This is the result of my poor choices. I am lying in a pool of my own blood, just waiting for my life essence to ooze out of me.

Regret hits me like a ton of bricks. I came here to help my brother, to find him, and it turns out I’ll end up the same way as he did. After this whole ordeal, I doubt he’s alive. He’s probably dead and buried somewhere, which is what I expect they will do to me once I breathe my last. I have failed the only family I could have had.

I still remember finding out about him. It was just someone’s slip of the tongue that my father had another son, and that he lived on this mountain, in a small town occupied solely by vampires. Such towns were often an occurrence in the past. Nowadays, there are humans living with them. But I was assured that this town was one of the few still left that counted only vampires among their inhabitants.

The very thought appealed to me. I’ve spent far too much time wandering the world, trying to find the place where I belong. I immediately thought to myself that this could be it. Especially when I found out that I have a brother there. Maybe I should say had. I can’t tell that for sure yet.

This town seemed like the perfect place for me to settle down and find myself, to find someone for myself. That is what I always wanted. I’ve grown tired of nameless women and people who were too quick to stab you in the back.
